I often see people drinking an energy drink before they go for a run, and I understand why. They promise more energy, better focus, and improved performance. But personally, I don't think they are the best choice for most runners.
If you are going for a short and easy run, I don't think you need an energy drink at all. Your body already has enough energy if you have eaten well and stayed hydrated. A glass of water is usually enough for a normal run.
For longer or harder runs, an energy drink might help some people because of the caffeine. Caffeine can make you feel more awake and may improve your performance. However, it can also increase your heart rate, make you feel nervous, or upset your stomach while running. Everyone reacts differently, so it is not something I would recommend trying for the first time before an important race.
Another reason I avoid energy drinks is the amount of sugar in many of them. Some contain a lot of sugar, while others have artificial sweeteners that can also cause stomach discomfort during exercise. Feeling sick halfway through a run is definitely not enjoyable.
If I need a little boost before running, I would rather have a cup of coffee or a small snack like a banana about 30 to 60 minutes before I start. It feels more natural, costs less, and is usually easier on my stomach.
In the end, I think energy drinks are not necessary for most runners. They may help some experienced athletes, but for everyday running, good sleep, healthy food, and enough water are much more important. That is just my opinion, but I believe building healthy habits will always give better long-term results than depending on a can of energy.
